Factories of the Future:
Digital, Distributed, Democratized Manufacturing

What will American manufacturing look like in five years? Ten years? Twenty years?

How will emerging technologies, from nanotech and organ printing to artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, change the nature of products and work?

What is America's strategy for creating and sustaining manufacturing jobs, preserving our technological edge, and maintaining global manufacturing leadership?

MForesight's 2017 National Summit will convene some of the nation's foremost manufacturing experts, business leaders, and decision-makers to explore these crucial questions.

While manufacturing was once dismissed as "dirty, dull, and dangerous," there's growing recognition that the sector is essential for our economic future. Waves of change—including the Maker Movement, 3D printing, accessible computer aided engineering tools, new knowledge-sharing platforms, and networked operational technology—are transforming the manufacturing sector. Factories are already on a path to be "digital, distributed, and democratized" in the future.

Outreach Events

MForesight has been working to build our network and share our vision with the manufacturing community and beyond.

Executive Director, Sridhar Kota, and Managing Director, Christine Andres, attended the Manufacturing USA Institute Network Meeting in Raleigh, NC on April 5, 2017 to connect with Manufacturing USA Institute leadership and to share MForesight’s work and how it links to the network.

Executive Director, Sridhar Kota, and Associate Director, Tom Mahoney, attended the MEP National Summit in Denver, CO on May 1-3, 2017 to network with MEP leadership and to lead a 90-minute session on the work of MForesight and the future of supply chains. MForesight Leadership Council member Sue Helper, from Case Western Reserve University, also attended and spoke at the session. Additional discussions were held with NIST cyber security experts to inform MForesight’s cyber security project and to learn about MEP centers’ cyber security work with small manufacturers.

Principal Researcher, Josh Bishop-Moser, attended Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) Annual Meeting in Hollywood, FL in mid-March. He networked with technology transfer leadership from universities across the nation and learned more about how MForesight can work with AUTM. Building our network to include technology transfer personnel will help MForesight increase access to new, gamechanging ideas. Dr. Bishop-Moser also attended the Materials Research Society (MRS) meeting in Phoenix, AZ from April 17-21, 2017. There, he networked with researchers to share information about MForesight and to gather gamechanger ideas from the various technical sessions.

MForesight also sent representation to the University Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) General Meeting in Baton Rouge, LA in late April to reach out to the community, share MForesight's vision, and seek collaborators.

Upcoming Workshops
ASME-MSEC
MForesight is hosting a workshop at ASME’s Manufacturing Science & Engineering Conference (MSEC): Gamechanging Ideas for Cost-Effective Low-Volume Manufacturing. Low-volume manufacturing of innovative and specialized products at economical pricing is needed in nearly every industry, yet mature manufacturing technologies capable of economically producing such products are limited. The purpose of this interactive workshop is to listen to experts, share ideas and build partnerships to broaden technical capabilities and access to low-volume manufacturing.  Learn more...

Metamaterials Manufacturing
Metamaterials can exhibit extraordinary mechanical, acoustic, optical, radio, and surface properties. These materials have the potential to greatly benefit aerospace, defense, medical instrumentation, biomedical, optics, sensing, telecommunication, robotics, and an array of other industry sectors. Many lab-scale prototypes have been created that are small, and use a slow and expensive process; scalable manufacturing is what is missing. MForesight is hosting a workshop to address that issue on Tuesday, June 20th in Washington, DC.

TMS
MForesight will be hosting a workshop at The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) conference on Thursday, October 12, 2017. Details have yet to be finalized; however, be on the lookout for more information about this event.

Report/Project Updates

Supply Chains Report

The upcoming report on supply chains: “Ensuring American Manufacturing Leadership Through Next Generation Supply Chains” has been reviewed by various stakeholders and suggested changes are in the process of being incorporated. Thank you to all who have contributed to this effort. We are looking forward to publicly releasing the report this summer at a special event in Washington, DC.

Cyber Security Workshop
On March 14-15, 2017, MForesight and Computing Community Consortium (CCC) gathered with experts in Washington, DC to discuss challenges and solutions of cyber security for manufacturers. The weather affected some of the participants’ travel, but we were able to have a productive meeting with over 40 experts. Highlights included hearing from Ken Krieg and Andre Gudger, as well as having plenty of time for experts to discuss issues in breakout groups. Learn more about the workshop

Cyber Security for Manufacturers Briefing on April 12, 2017. Special thanks to Khari Douglas from CCC for the photo.
Not long after the workshop, MForesight and CCC worked with the Congressional Manufacturing Caucus to host a Briefing in Washington, DC for Cyber Security for Manufacturers. Approximately 90 attendees heard an overview of the challenges and previewed highlights from the forthcoming report which will deliver key recommendations to public and private stakeholders. Read a full summary of the event...

Spring Leadership Council Meeting
MForesight’s Leadership Council met in Pittsburgh, PA on March 20-21 where we were hosted by University of Pittsburgh and LC member, Rebecca Bagley. The gathering was kicked off by a tour of engineering facilities at Pitt, followed by a dinner at the University Club and talk from local manufacturing business owner, David Bonvenuto, President and CEO of Oberg Industries Inc. The next day consisted of a business meeting in which MForesight leadership provided updates on various activities and plans and outlined a vision for moving forward. Lively discussions were had throughout the day in which Leadership Council members shared their thoughts on key topics. Thank you to all who attended the meeting!

New Staff & Staff Transitions
Since the last newsletter, MForesight’s staff has included new additions, as well as some farewells. We are excited to announce that Dr. Christine Andres and Tom Mahoney joined MForesight in January as the Managing Director and Associate Director, respectively. Nicol (Nikki) Taylor-Vargo now works part-time for MForesight as a Project Manager in addition to her duties with the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan.

Dr. Christine Andres is leading the MForesight team in delivering on our mission. Prior to joining MForesight, she worked as a Foreign Affairs Officer for the U.S. State Department, and was a Senior Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing) Research Engineer at 3M. She has a Bachelor of Science and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.
