Cost-Effective Low-Volume Manufacturing

On June 5th, MForesight hosted a workshop on Gamechanging Ideas for Cost-Effective Low-Volume Manufacturing at the ASME-MSEC Conference held at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. Low-volume manufacturing of innovative and specialized products at economical pricing is needed in nearly every industry, yet mature manufacturing technologies capable of economically producing such products are limited. This interactive workshop brought together over 75 manufacturing experts to share ideas and build partnerships to broaden technical capabilities and access to low-volume manufacturing.  Read more...

Metamaterials Manufacturing
MForesight partnered with Dr. Chris Spadaccini from Lawrence Livermore National Labs to lead a workshop exploring the challenges and opportunities for metamaterials manufacturing in the United States. Approximately 40 experts from industry, academia, federal labs, and government gathered in Washington, DC on June 20th to develop recommendations for public and private stakeholders in the areas of research and development priorities, technology implementation challenges, and related policies. Outreach Events

MForesight has been working to build our network and share our vision with the manufacturing community and beyond.

On July 13th, Associate Director Tom Mahoney, went to the Cybersecurity for Manufacturing Workshop at the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute in Chicago to share MForesight’s preliminary findings and recommendations on manufacturing supply chain cybersecurity, and to learn more about DMDII’s plans to create a cybersecurity testbed at their facility. The workshop provided an opportunity to network with cybersecurity experts from major corporations such as Boeing and Siemens, private service providers such as Cyberpoint International, and government representatives from NIST and DoD.  The workshop built upon select recommendations from discussions at MForesight's Cyber Security for Manufacturers Workshop.

Principal Researcher, Josh Bishop-Moser, attended the International Design Engineering Technical Conference from August 6-9th in Cleveland, OH to continue gathering gamechanger ideas and connecting with experts in various fields.

Upcoming Projects

  • Scalable Processing of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs): Differing from traditional alloys, HEAs offer extraordinary mechanical properties and combinations of properties, including hardness, strength, and/or ductility not previously possible. The near infinite combinations of alloying metals offers metallurgists the ability to design targeted alloys with specifically desired combinations of properties and ultra-high performance. In a very limited number of cases, HEAs can be manufactured using traditional liquid phase processing (i.e. casting), but for most HEA combinations, large-scale commercial melting processes are not currently viable.

  • High-Speed Viscous Ink Deposition: Viscous ink deposition is the process of applying and patterning materials that have a high viscosity, often due to complex chemistry and/or nano-structured components. Example applications include directly patterning batteries, silicone prosthetics, electrodes, 2D and 3D electronics, highly viscous adhesives, cell cultures, bio-absorbable polymers, nano-structured materials, metamaterials, and more. While the applications and materials are broad and constantly expanding, the manufacturing challenges are consistent and restrictive.

Please contact us at info@mforesight.org if you would like to engage with us on either of these topics. Also, if you have a topic or technology that you think MForesight should bring the community together to explore, submit it as a gamechanger.
Upcoming Events

  • SSTI Annual Conference (September 13-15th): MForesight leadership will be attending SSTI to lead a discussion-based session, “Maximizing Innovation in Manufacturing: A Look Ahead,” which will explore recommendations around enhancing performance across the supply chain, improving cybersecurity for manufacturers, and developing an advanced manufacturing workforce.

  • TMS (October 12th): MForesight, with Leadership Council member Glenn Daehn taking the lead, is partnering with TMS to run a gamechanger workshop, "Materials Innovations to Support Next-Generation Manufacturing."

  • FABTECH (November 6-9th): MForesight will be conducting a survey of participants, aiming to learn from SMEs about their technology challenges and opportunities, and how they think government and academia can help lower barriers and prepare the workforce. Additionally, Executive Director Sridhar Kota will be moderating a panel on November 6th: “Advanced Manufacturing for the Next Industrial Evolution.”
